Journalist talks about her conversion

Described by one writer as "a Jewish-born rock journalist turned salty Christian blog queen," Dawn Eden has been a deputy news editor at the New York Daily News for several years. Beginning in early July 2007 she will become the director of the Cardinal Newman Society's new Love and Responsibility program in Washington, DC. A former rock historian Eden has written on music for Mojo, Salon, New York Press and Billboard among others. She has her own blog, The Dawn Patrol, and her writings on non-music topics have appeared in numerous other publications, including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Daily News. Her first book, The Thrill of the Chaste chronicles her conversion to both Christianity and chastity.

BustedHalo: Dawn, you and I have known each other for a long time. I knew you mainly as a rock and roll journalist, who did liner notes for lots of cd reissues and wrote for a bunch of magazines...

Dawn Eden: (laughs) See, I love this because you having known me for a while can attest to the fact that I’m not just a poser. You know there are plenty of Christian writers who say, “Oh yeah, I was hip once, I was in the rock world once.”

BH: I can vouch for the fact that you were once in the rock world. In fact you and I once worked together when you wrote press releases for my old band and on my solo cds. So this is a big turn for you. Talk to me a little bit about how your book came about, Thrill of the Chaste. And what got you away from rock journalism and into writing a book on chastity.

All sewn up

I am very glad to report that my surgery yesterday morning went very well. I just got home and am dashing off this entry before getting into the serious business of resting up. Many thanks to those who answered my request for prayers.

As I wrote earlier, the operation was to remove the rest of my thyroid—a precaution in the wake of the removal of a thyroid nodule last January 29 that proved cancerous. My surgeon told me afterwards that it looks like the remainder of my thyroid was cancer-free, thank God. He did remove a few lymph nodes for testing, but it's my understanding from him that even if cancer is found in them, it won't mean that it has spread elsewhere in the body. The last part of my treatment will come in two months, when I will have to return to the hospital to take radioactive-iodine pills that will wipe out any remaining traces of thyroid tissue from my system.

Since, I promised my dad, who picked me up from the hospital, that I wouldn't blog at length until I've rested, I will leave it there for now, except to say that, as before, the experience reminded me how much of a difference it makes when people pray for me. The first 16 hours after surgery were much more of an endurance test this time around than last time, yet here I am now at home and really doing well. I was even able to walk the few blocks to my place on this beautiful sunny day. So, wishing blessings back at you and will write more soon.

DC's Catholic Information Center Boosts Bloggers Marching for Life (on January 21 and 22 - see below)

I'm delighted to announce that I am volunteering for Catholic Information Center, which took me up on my suggestion that it reach out to bloggers attending the March for Life. Following is a press release I wrote announcing the center's special events to coincide with the march. See you at the tea party!
. . . . . . . . . .

The Catholic Information Center, downtown Washington's "street parish" — thought to be the first U.S. Catholic bookstore on Facebook — is poised to be "Blogger Central" on the day of the 2008 March for Life, with free wireless Internet, a 15% discount for pro-life bloggers, and a tea party, plus celebrity book and DVD signings.

"Our store and chapel have traditionally been a respite stop for March-for-Life participants," noted CIC manager Kevin Jones. "This year, we wanted to do something more, so—since we already offer free wireless internet—we decided to create some special incentives to encourage marchers to show their support for the Culture of Life on the web."

The 15% discount for pro-life bloggers will apply all day on January 21-22. To receive the discount, pro-life bloggers must register in advance by e-mailing their name and blog URL to info@cicdc.org by Friday, January 18. On the day of the march, those who have registered may give their name to the CIC cashier to receive the discount on anything the store sells, including books, rosaries, jewelry, prayer cards, religious decorations, and stationery.

For the purpose of this discount, and to encourage pro-lifers to have a strong Web presence, the CIC is defining a "pro-life blog" as any family-friendly Web site that actively promotes the culture of life. This includes MySpace and Facebook pages, so long as they contain a prominently displayed pro-life item.

The bookstore recently augmented its own Web site, www.cicdc.org, with a "Catholic Information Center" Facebook page — believed to be the first-ever Facebook fan club for a U.S. Catholic bookstore.

Bloggers who visit the CIC during the afternoon of January 22 will find a special treat: a tea party immediately following the March for Life, from 3-6 p.m., hosted by Dawn Patrol blogger Dawn Eden. Eden, who has appeared on EWTN's "Life on the Rock," will be signing copies of her book The Thrill of the Chaste: Finding Fulfillment While Keeping Your Clothes On, which will be available for 25% off the cover price.

"I can't wait to meet fellow pro-life bloggers from around the country and connect faces to names," said Eden. "Many of us are already planning to come to the Blogs4Life conference at the Family Research Council earlier that morning, before the March. The tea party is a great change to relax and get to know each other better after the long day and, thanks to the wi-fi, do some 'liveblogging' for the folks back home."

The CIC is located at 1501 K Street NW, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day of the march. Mass will be in the chapel at 12:05 p.m., and the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed there from 1-4 p.m. For more information, contact CIC manager Kevin Jones, (202) 783-2062, or e-mail info@cicdc.org.

Full schedule of CIC events supporting the March for Life:

Monday, January 21

1 p.m. – Joyce Zounis, a seven-time "consumer of choice," will appear at the CIC to discuss the change of heart that led to her appearing alongside Norma McCorvey, Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, in the new DVD documentary I Was Wrong, about women who regret their abortions. She will be joined at the appearances by two of her friends, fellow post-abortive women who have likewise gone public with their experiences: Cynthia, whose story appears along with Joyce's in the book Motherhood Interrupted, and Millie, whose story is featured in the book Real Abortion Stories. Millie also directs the National Abortion Helpline.

Tuesday, January 22

All day – Pro-life bloggers will receive a 15% discount. To receive the discount, send your name and blog URL to info@cicdc.org by Friday, January 18.

3-6 p.m. – Dawn Eden, author of The Thrill of the Chaste: Finding Fulfillment While Keeping Your Clothes On, will host a "blogger tea party" and sign copies of her book, available for 25% off the cover price.

uncle jim? - the Epilogue

.....
'uncle jim'? Who or what is 'uncle jim'?

A year and a half to two years ago, or thereabouts, I was introduced to a 'blog' written by a nephew. Now, how's that for a big hint? His name is Dennis. His blog site is called 'Vita Mea'. Up to that time I didn't know what a blog was or that it even existed.

He is a seminarian at St Meinrad Catholic Seminary in southern IN. He is there studying to be ordained a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, TN. He should be ordained this coming Spring 2008.

In an e-mail to me he recommended I check out a blog being written by a woman named Dawn Eden. She is a woman he had met at some point and a writer whom he admired for her style and sass. Her blog site is called 'the Dawn Patrol'. She is a very prolific writer and 'pro-life' advocate. I found she has a very engaging style of writing and I became a regular reader.

She has, in the past year, become an internationally acclaimed author. Her book regarding chastity was released last December. It is now in the sixth printing, and has been published in Spanish. I encourage all of you to read it. It has been acclaimed by just about every Catholic publication and Organization you can think of...and many other religious groups, Christian and non, as well as secular. Its title: the Thrill of the Chaste.

It was on her blog that I wrote my first ever 'comment'. I signed-off as 'uncle jim'. I left no explanation for that moniker at the time, but it described how it was that I was there ... I am Dennis' uncle jim. I have since adopted that as my usual 'signature' when blogging.

Note: If you've read my story at the bottom of the blog entitled 'Do I Know You?', you know that I am the 2nd born of a set of identical twin boys - the first children of our parents. The 1st born of the set is Dennis' dad, my older [by 11 minutes] brother.

Now, I am writing a blog of my own - this one ... and I owe it largely to Dennis, Dawn, and the writers of the blog sites called 'Adoro Te Devote', 'Adam's Ale', and 'the Judge Report'. I Strongly encourage and exhort you to visit their blogs. There are others who write that I read, and I am sure I have been influenced by them, also [like k_sra, and chez joel (rip), and ...].

I hope I can add something to your day by providing inspirational content that will encourage you, and fill you with the Joy of the Lord. If you have a sharing you'd be willing to allow readers here to ponder, please write it in a 'comment box' and we'll do the rest.
